BOAT WASH
CO-CHAIRS | DAN DALL’OLMO & TERRY PAQUET
There are many aquatic invasive species in the lakes, streams, and rivers surrounding Long, Mickey and Ruth Lakes. The most effective action to prevent invasives from entering our lakes is to wash watercraft and trailers before they enter the lake. For several years, Long Lake Foundation (now LLA) worked to build public awareness by hosting boat washing demonstrations using a mobile wash system, posting signage, and encouraging the use of the boat washing station at the township office. Now that Long Lake Township has completed its redesign of the Crescent Shores boat launch, LLA is working with the Township to place a permanent boat washing station at the Crescent Shores launch site.
In preparation, we began studying what other area lake associations have done (they all have a boat washing station at their launch sites). We also engaged with other lake associations (Glen, Lake Leelanau, Crystal) and the Benzie Conservation District, through monthly meetings, to share ideas and promote a region-wide awareness of the importance of boat washing.
LLA and the Charter Township of Long Lake are determined to prevent new invasive species from entering our lakes. We feel strongly that boats must be washed prior to their launch into Long Lake. In fact, Michigan law requires that boat owners clean their boats before they launch or transport them over land. Long Lake Township has already applied for grant funding to pay for a boat cleaning station at the exit from the lake. Due to the configuration of the launch, it appears necessary to have a second station to handle traffic entering the lake. The Long Lake Association intends to raise the funds necessary to acquire and operate this station at the entrance to the lake.
We will need engineering work and a permit from EGLE before we know the cost of the project. Other lakes have spent approximately $40,000 to purchase equipment, drill the well, run power, and prepare the site. Additional funds are required to hire an attendant during Summer. Therefore, LLA will need to raise a minimum of $50,000 in the next 12 months to have the boat washing station operational by fall 2026.
We have already begun receiving donations to the LLA Boat Wash fund. Please consider donating and visit our website at www.longlakeassociation.com to your contribution. Every dollar contributes to keeping Long, Mickey, and Ruth Lakes beautiful.
